Music Theory Lessons

For those of us who can play instruments but are more interested in exploring the “why” behind the sounds we make, music theory gives us a series of scientific and mathematical explanations for why music sounds the way it does, and how to add small pieces of music together to create something larger, and hopefully, more unique. Maybe you feel comfortable playing chords on your guitar, but you’re not exactly sure how to build your own chords or how to tweak them so they’re just right. Maybe you’re interested in crafting melodies, but your knowledge of scales is a little limited. Or perhaps you’re interested in reading sheet music, but you’re not really sure how to start.

As audio alchemists, we love to innovate, change it up, and explore sounds in new and unique ways. It can be useful, however, to explore traditional approaches by learning classical Western compositions, scales, diatonic harmony, aural skills, and rhythm, so that we can make our musical pantry as big as possible. This allows us to build off our existing knowledge and start creating our own recipes, making music that is unique to us.

We offer both classical and jazz music theory instruction, so that you have the best baseline to work from. Music theory helps us play and write better music, and it’s a lot of fun to learn.
